A LOOK BETWEEN THE ISLANDS
Skiathos is the best spot to start a cruise in the Sporades, an archipelago a few miles north from Eubea that is a fascinating alternative to the most famous and popular Cyclades.
The islands are arranged on an axis running from north-west to south-east, and the route from Skiathos and Skyros to return exploits the Meltemi giving quiet sail to those who prefer surfing upwind. The beauty of the islands, the white beaches, marinas and the charming villages, castles and historic sites that bring to mind mythological feats will make you fall in love with this greek archipelago.
Cosmopolitan and full of accommodation, Skiathos is a very green island surrounded by more than 70 bays and coves and beautiful golden beaches, such as Koukounaries lapped by emerald waters, and considered the most beautiful of the entire Greece. Inland, the Evaghelistria monastery encloses a Byzantine church, a precious wooden iconostasis, marvelous frescoes and an old library. And on the ruins of the 1200 Venetian fortress overlooking Bourtzi - small peninsula where you can enjoy the view across the Skyatos harbor - was born a charming outdoor theater that hosts many cultural events.
In just five miles to east we meet Skopelos island covered with thick pine forests and expanses of plum trees for which it is renowned. We will arrive not before a stop in the beautiful and sheltered bay of Panormos - a mile south-east of the islet of Dasa - where the pine trees that surround it offer the atmosphere of a mountain lake. Fascinating is also the port of Skopelos with a dense array of two-storey houses which open as an amphitheater on the sea. For dinner you'll be spoiled for choice among one of the characteristic restaurants where fresh fish and delicious dried plums "Damaskina" are served.
Few miles Northwest of Skopelos there's Alonissos, the wildest of the Sporades islands. With virtually no roads, the island offers hospitality exclusively thanks to small tourist facilities delightfully family run and is known for the presence of a native species of goats, impossible to find elsewhere. A must is a stop in one of the beautiful bays of Kokino Kastro among the red rock cliffs (Kokino in greek means red), sandy beaches and pine trees that come down to the water. The port of Patitiri, the main town of Alonissos, provides a good shelter from the prevailing winds before resuming the route.
Sailing towards the Northeast to 12 miles from the port of Patitiri, we meet the island of Kyra Panagia, also known as the Pelagos or Pelagonisi. It is said to be the ancient Alonissos, the famous Atlantis disappeared from the Northern Sporades. The island is a possession of the Meghistis Lavras monastery on Mount Athos, outside of its borders, which is reached via a long stone staircase of 100 meters. Low, undulating, rocky but fragrant with Mediterranean scrub, Pelagos is practically deserted. But this small nature reserve also houses a shrine of seals and a large herd of goats. In the south-west of the island there's Kira Panaya bay, a safe shelter from Meltemi, while on the north side, the beautiful bay of Planitis invites you to dive in the clear and very calm water.
In the south-east from Kirà Panagia island and Yioùra, with an extension of eight kilometers square and with the top high more than 350 meters, lies the small island Piperi which forms the core of the Maritime Park.
Heading to the north, after ten miles you come to the small Psatoùra, the northernmost port of the Sporades, with the eponymous lighthouse that dominates its center. It's from volcanic origin and offers a wonderful landscape. To mention also the beautiful beach with its brown color that make it unique and its clear waters that preserve the ancient remains of what historians identify as the ancient Chrisi.
Skyros is the largest and easternmost island of the Sporades and also the windiest of the archipelago. Formed of two halves separated by a narrow isthmus, Skyros offers enchanting scenery, like the beautiful port of Akladhi, small nearby bay at the southern end of the island. But the real port of Skyros is Linaria, five miles north of Akladhi. The island is known for its historical and architectural relics enclosed in Kastro in the capital and in the Monastery of St. George but also for the ponies that once helped the farmers in the fields and today have become tourist attraction. Fish restaurnats are excellent and are supplied directly from the fishermen living on the island and also inns that offer delicious tastings of cheeses and local delicacies.
On the way back to Skiathos, we'll enjoy sightings of the beautiful island Skantzoura and the Bay of Vathudi. The first one is surrounded by rocky islets and it's identified as the ancient island of Scandirà. Like Pelagos, Skantzoura is a possession - out of the border - of Mount Athos. At the center of the island lies the abandoned monastery. If Weather will allow us, from here you can choose whether to go and return directly to Skiathos or make one last stop south of Skopelos.
From august 5th to august 19th. 1 or 2 weeks Flotilla.
